You Can Make a Difference by Tutoring

Ever felt called to work with an MPS student one on one and see them progress in reading ability over the school year? Common Ground is rolling out a new program that offers you this opportunity to work with a motivated student for the whole year.

Common Ground heard over and over that education in Milwaukee was an equity issue when Covid shut down the schools. Our kids fell farther behind. We noticed that MPS received money through the CARES Act, and we successfully pushed MPS to allocate money specifically for tutoring. We are now announcing Forward Scholars LLC, a program modeled on Book Buddies, designed by Columbia University Teachers College, with proven results in raising primary student’s reading achievement using volunteer tutors.

We have a $407,500 contract with MPS for the 2022-23 school year to place 120 volunteer tutors in five MPS schools, with a trained supervisor on site each day to coordinate this learning program.

It is an exciting venture, and we invite you to participate from the beginning.  You can read our position paper here for details. Want to talk about it more? Forward Scholars LLC is going to make a difference in children’s lives. Feel free to call Pat Ruttum at 262-786-4567, or email her at psruttum@hotmail.com for more detail. You do not have to be a member of Common Ground to tutor so please pass on this information to any friend you know who might want to be part of this.
